How Long Are Sessions?
This depends on the type of service. Initial intake sessions are 1 hour. Most individual and family sessions are 45 minutes. Psychological testing sessions are usually scheduled in 1-2 hour blocks of time.
What Can I Expect From My First Meeting?
The first meeting serves several purposes: We are getting to know one another to determine if we are the right fit to work together; I am assessing over the first few sessions what the main goals are of our work together and determining if I can be of service. We will talk about alot of parts of your life that may be seemingly unrelated to why you scheduled your appointment, however it gives me a sense of who you are and what strengths you bring to sessions.
How Long Will I Attend Sessions?
This depends on your goals for our work together. Some want to meet weekly for a specific period of time, others want to meet bimonthly or monthly, and some find that just a handful of sessions are enough. We will discuss and create a plan together.
For Parents: How Does Treatment Work For My Child/Adolescent?
Both individual and collateral family work are imperative to help your child/adolescent succeed. To that end, parent(s)/caregivers are asked to attend each session as there will be time set aside at the beginning or end for communication or at minimum monthly sessions with parent(s/caregiver(s)) will be scheduled.
For Children/Adolescents: Will You Tell My Parents What I Say? How Can I Trust You?
One of the most important parts of a therapeutic relationship is trust: it is my ethical responsibility to maintain my client’s confidentiality. That being said, the limits of confidentiality will be explained (verbally and in writing) during first meeting. In summary, I will maintain your confidentiality unless it becomes clear that there is a danger to yourself and/or others.
